Rising above Manhattan’s Hudson Yards, Equinox Hotel New York redefines luxury hospitality through a philosophy centered on performance, recovery, and wellbeing. Conceived as the world’s first fitness-focused luxury hotel, this project combines advanced environmental design with a refined architectural language. It prioritizes sleep, restoration, and sensory balance.

For Edmon, whose work focuses on architectural and hospitality photography, documenting Equinox Hotel meant capturing a space where design is engineered as carefully as a high-performance training environment. The photography explores the intersection of architecture, wellness, and atmosphere within one of New York’s most ambitious urban developments.

The resulting imagery presents the hotel as both a sanctuary above the city and a precision-built environment for modern living.

A Landmark at Hudson Yards

Equinox Hotel occupies the upper floors of 35 Hudson Yards, one of the tallest towers within Manhattan’s transformative Hudson Yards development. The project was developed by Related Companies and Oxford Properties Group, whose master plan reshaped the west side of Manhattan into a dense vertical neighborhood of culture, commerce, and luxury living.

Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the tower rises approximately 1,000 feet above the Hudson River, placing the hotel among the most elevated hospitality destinations in New York City. From this vantage point, guests experience sweeping views across the Hudson River, Midtown Manhattan, and the evolving skyline of the West Side—a dramatic urban setting that forms an essential backdrop to the architecture.

Interior Design by Joyce Wang Studio

The interiors were designed by Joyce Wang Studio, the internationally acclaimed Hong Kong–based design practice known for crafting highly atmospheric hospitality spaces.

For Equinox, the studio developed a design language rooted in calm intensity and sensory comfort. The spaces combine dark stone surfaces, brushed metals, layered lighting, and tactile materials to create an environment that feels both grounded and restorative.

Joyce Wang has described the design approach as an exploration of balance between the physical and emotional experience of space. As the studio notes: “The design explores the intersection between performance and restoration, creating environments that support both energy and recovery.” This philosophy is reflected throughout the hotel, where spaces are designed to feel controlled, quiet, and immersive.

Photographing a Hotel in Constant Motion

One of the defining challenges of photographing Equinox Hotel New York was that the hotel remained fully operational during the entire shoot. Hotels never truly pause. Guests move through spaces at all hours, wellness facilities operate continuously, and the rhythm of hospitality life unfolds throughout the day and night.

To work within this environment, the photography was conducted around the clock, carefully navigating moments when spaces naturally quietened. Early mornings before guest activity began. Late evenings as public spaces slowed. Short windows between operational transitions.

At every stage, guest privacy remained a top priority. Camera positions, angles, and timing were carefully controlled to ensure that no identifiable guests appeared in the final imagery. Despite these constraints, the objective remained unchanged: deliver architectural photography that meets the highest editorial and professional standards while respecting the living environment of the hotel. The process required patience, flexibility, and careful coordination with the hotel team.

Capturing the Architecture of Performance

Photographing Equinox Hotel demanded a restrained visual approach. The interiors operate within a carefully controlled lighting environment designed to promote calm and relaxation. Rather than bright spectacle, the spaces rely on subtle gradients of light and shadow.

For Edmon, the visual strategy focused on revealing the spatial clarity and material richness of the design. Wide architectural frames establish the relationship between the hotel and the Hudson Yards skyline.

Interior compositions emphasize balance, symmetry, and lighting depth. Detail shots capture the craftsmanship embedded in furniture, surfaces, and lighting fixtures. The resulting images reflect the hotel’s core philosophy: Luxury that performs quietly and precisely.

Wellness Architecture in the Sky

Equinox Hotel is deeply integrated with the brand’s global wellness ecosystem. Within the building sits one of the most advanced Equinox flagship fitness clubs, alongside spa facilities, recovery treatments, and training environments designed for high performance.

The architecture therefore operates as a hybrid destination—part luxury hotel, part elite wellness facility. Equinox describes the concept simply: “Equinox Hotels is built for those who want to maximise every moment of their lives.” That ambition is visible throughout the architecture, where design and technology combine to support both physical and mental wellbeing.

Architectural Photography as Brand Storytelling

In contemporary hospitality design, photography plays a crucial role in communicating architecture to a global audience. Images become the visual language through which projects are experienced across editorial platforms, design publications, and digital media.
